Artists in the Now: Lisa Goldfarb

This is our friend, the amazingly talented and totally whacked Lisa Goldfarb.

When I met Lisa she was painting severed heads, sort of like this one entitled: Self-Portrait: Not a Good Day! (right, below)

Sometimes Phil and I think Lisa's work shows a sense of disconnection and anxiety. Other times we think her paintings show both her playfulness and strange sense of humor. Probably it is a mixture of both. She has had many exhibitions in New York City, including ones at the Brooklyn Artist's Gym, The Silver Whale Gallery, and the Visual Arts Gallery. She recieved a B.A. in Painting from Moravian College in Bethlehem Pennsylvania in 1996 and then in 2000, she received an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

This work (left) can be seen at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Lisa writes that she realized she was going to be an artist when at the age of 4 she discovered the splatter brush technique in her Nana's painting studio. She was encouraged by her family and driven by a constant need to constructively release the angst boiling within.

Recently, Lisa fell in love and moved from New York City (the second home of the Jews!) to Germany. Her love has short-curcuited her brain several times in the past week alone.

She is currently showing twenty portraits of German language students at the Augsburger vhs. She was also interviewed recently on a webcast during which she displayed her dazzling skills and mutilated the German language.

I should note, too, that she grew up with a bad-ass lizard named Zard (R.I.P.), and you can see Lisa's process of painting Zard (above, clicky), as well as a video in which she features her lizard and bird puppets (below, clicky).

A quick search on the web will bring up her official site, which features even more work from the wonderful world of Lisa. On this site you can also link to a site for the Goldfarbs of the world to unite! I label her under: Amazing and Talented Artist: One of a Kind!

I have always wished I could paint, and if I could, even in my most twisted moments, I would never have come up with the severed head idea. I love it! HA! I am looking forward to seeing these videos when I have time.

I guess I wasn't done. I wanted to say how much I love the "Embryo" (that's what it says at the top when I enlarge the photos) pieces, but those portraits are amazing. You can really *see* those women.

Lisa,

Your art is powerful, emotional, and makes me smile. Es ist so gut! It's so good to see it again. I need to e-mail you; I've been very delinquent. I love the YouTube of Zard, too. Habst du eine guten tag! (The extent of my high school German.)

Jean,
I know--I wish I could paint, too. Lisa's videos are hysterical, though Phil and I were rolling over with laughter at some points during her interview (which I don't think she has up on her home site). The videos were she shows how she paints are super neat: She always starts with the eyes.

Embryo is cool, isn't it?!

Anon,

I love Lisa's colors, too. She's been drawing that circular shape (in Embryo)for as long as I've known her.

The depth and power of the colors speak to me of passion and strong emotion. The portrait of the woman shows a quiet dignity and a strong sense of self. Liza in her portrait of the young girl reflects the joy of youth. Excellent job!

Hey Mom!

Everyone loves Lisa's colors--they are really bright and distinct.

Thanks for writing in! Sorry I had to get off the phone so quickly last night. We lost power here; the storm was bad.
